The viola is often called the heart of the orchestra. Slightly larger than the violin and tuned a fifth lower, it produces a warm, rich tone that adds depth and color to every ensemble. School orchestras, youth symphonies, and honor ensembles consistently need more viola players than they can find, giving dedicated violists excellent opportunities for placement, leadership roles, and scholarships. One of the unique skills viola students develop is reading alto clef. While unfamiliar to many beginning musicians, our teachers introduce it gradually and naturally from the very first lessons, allowing students to become confident readers while building a strong technical foundation.
What Students Learn in Viola Lessons
Viola lessons are personalized to the student's age, experience, and musical goals. Beginners develop healthy posture, bow control, intonation, rhythmic accuracy, and confident alto clef reading. As students progress, they build shifting, vibrato, tone production, musical expression, and repertoire from the standard viola literature. Advanced students receive individualized coaching for school orchestra placement, region and All-State auditions, youth symphony auditions, solo performance, and college preparation.
Throughout the year, students also have opportunities to perform in our recital hall, building confidence while celebrating their musical progress.
Viola Lessons for Children and Adults
The viola is an excellent instrument for both children and adults. Most children begin viola at around the age of 7 or 8 using fractional-size instruments that are carefully matched to their arm length and physical development. Students who already play the violin can transition to the viola at nearly any age, often finding that much of their technique transfers naturally.
Adult students are equally welcome, whether returning to music after years away or beginning lessons for the very first time. Many adults are drawn to the viola's warm, mellow sound and enjoy learning at their own pace in a supportive, one-on-one environment.

Violin or Viola?
Many families are unsure whether the violin or the viola is the better choice. While the two instruments share many playing techniques and even look similar, each has its own unique sound and musical role. The violin is smaller, brighter, and tuned higher, while the viola is slightly larger and known for its warm, rich, and expressive tone.
Most of our violin instructors also teach the viola, giving them a unique perspective on both instruments.
